Welcome to the other end of the room and the ugly worm, Magmaw.

There’s something to keep in mind even before the fight starts and that’s with the duo trash pack that guards the encounter. As a tank, you need to be sure to coordinate with your fellow offtank as to positioning to make sure that you’re both the furthest away from each other as possibelt to ensure that when the adds charge across the room to switch their tank targets, you two are the ones that will be exchanging the adds, not anyone else in the raid.

When it comes to the boss fight itself, there are a few things that you need to keep in mind as the encounter progresses.

First and most important is an aspect of the boss that he shares with a large number of bosses in the game. If there’s nobody in melee range of the boss at all times during the encounter, Magmaw will pretty much flip out and destroy the raid.

As the tank, it is your job (obviously) to ensure that you are there at all times to make sure that this doesn’t happen.

The other big ability that you need to keep an eye out for during the course of the fight is Magmaw’s Mangle ability. What he’ll do is snatch you up into his mouth and basically chew on you until he reaches the point where the raid forces his head to pound onto the ground, at which point, he’ll release you.

This ability does a pretty hefty amount of damage over it’s 30 second duration so it’s up to you to ensure that you have a cooldown up and ready to deal with it as he’s about to use the ability.

Remember that his Mangle ability is a team effort. If your cooldowns aren’t quite up to the task of keeping you up during his Mangle, don’t be afraid to ask for help from your healers. Just keep in mind that without a cooldown, it’s going to be very hard to keep you up during the duration of his Mangle attack.

The final thing that you need to watch out for is the brief window of time before and after Magmaw’s head is impaled onto the ground. Be sure to warn your raid to shift out of melee range during those times as when Magmaw’s target area shifts from his body to his head, it’s possible that they might end up closest to the new target and end up getting one shot to make sure to let them know of this possibility and do your best to get in there as soon as the transitions are done.

Drop by again next week as we move deeper into Blackwing Descent and take a look at Maloriak.
