On the eve of patch 2.4

Patch 2.4 will likely go live this coming Tuesday and if not, then most assuredly next Tuesday. Are you ready?

I went over some of the upcoming patch 2.4 changes back in February, as well as looked at a couple of the new tanking items.

About the only skill change that is coming with 2.4 that affects tanking warriors, is the change to Cleave. From the patch notes:

Cleave: This ability will no longer strike any secondary target which is under the effect of crowd-control spells that break on taking damage. i.e. Polymorph, Sap, etc.

I guess this is nice, but in my opinion it is just a dumbing down move.  If you are worth your salt, you can move mobs as needed so that your Cleaves aren’t breaking CC’s anyway.

Other than that, I hope you’ve been saving up those badges for the new badge loot!

  1. “Patch 2.4 will likely go live this coming Tuesday and if not, then most assuredly next Tuesday.”

Really? What’s your source? I hope you’re right, but I wasn’t expecting it for a few more weeks yet…

  2. Spot on about dumbing down Cleave. They’re doing the same thing to the Bear Tank populace on Swipe. Swipe suffers from the same lack of serious threat production as Cleave does though, so it’s really only useful once you’ve got either a solid threat lead over your healers and you’re Focus firing your DPS to kill targets one at a time. They’re basically taking a marginally useful ability (at least in regards to my tanking technique) and dumbing it down for tanks who rely too heavily on it and don’t know how to avoid breaking CC. Tanks who actually KNOW their craft will be changing targets and juggling high level threat abilities on them anyway, so the serious tank probably won’t be affected by this too much.

Regarding the 2.4 Druid Changes, I wasn’t wild about the GCD change for Mangle initially, but everything else was on a 1.5 sec GCD while Mangle was on a 1 sec GCD. This is probably a change that needed to be made to balance things out a bit more. I think, in the long run, it won’t be TOO detrimental to a bear’s TPS, especially with the improvements to the damage component of Lacerate. Should even out in the wash. I’m averaging 800-1100 TPS through KZ right now, so we’ll see if that changes at all after 2.4 goes live.

  3. I stand corrected! The 2.4 patch is being applied this week.
